Have you ever wondered or driven yourself crazy with the question: "Does he love me?" Or "Do I love him?"
This is a question everyone has asked themselves at least once in there life. Love is a funny thing because so many things, including co-dependency and ego gratification (ie: searching for narcissistic adoration, sex, money, security, fame etc) can masquerade as love and easily fool us into believing someone loves us and/or we are in love with someone else, when in fact we are not in love or loved.
In fact, one thing is for sure: Someone does NOT love you simply because they told you so. There's an old saying "Don't watch their lips...watch their feet". What that means is don't listen to the words the person says (ie: I love you baby!) but instead watch their actions (ie: their feet).
If so many things can masquerade as love, then how do we know if someone really does love us? How do we know if we love someone else?
After much searching, it appears the answer to this question is best found (again) in the wisdom of Corinthians in the Bible.
What is love?
"Love is patient
and kind.
Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude.
Love does
not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record
of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but
rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses
faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Love
will last forever.”
Bible -- 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Because of the Bible's wisdom, we now have the tools to dissect whether or not someone loves us and/or if we love them.
Just read each line slowly and carefully and ask yourself "am I giving or receiving these traits which define love"?
For example, if someone says they love you, are they patient with you? Are they kind? Do they always speak the truth even if it hurts their ego to say such things? Are they hopeful, never giving up, enduring through every circumstance of thick and thin?
Or is that person who says they love you rude, jealous, boastful, proud, irritable, keeping record of your every wrong, demanding his own way and being passive aggressive and having their own secret fun, secret happiness and secret glee by knowing he is doing a serious injustice behind your back?
First things first--are you in love and/or are you loved?
